As intelligent systems become more capable, what must remain human?

Gil Cohen is the Founder and Steward of Cognitive State Systems LLC and author of The Human Layer: Designing Human Agency in the Age of Intelligent Systems. His work explores human agency, judgment, responsibility, evidence and the design of intelligent environments.

“The environment may be shared. The journey is still personal.”
Current Work

One idea. A book. A working experience.

The public work is intentionally separated into clear doors: understand the idea, experience the method, or explore a qualified real-world implementation.

Short bio

Gil Cohen is the Founder and Steward of Cognitive State Systems LLC and author of The Human Layer: Designing Human Agency in the Age of Intelligent Systems. His work explores human agency, judgment, responsibility, and the design of intelligent environments through the Human Layer and the RESET · IGNITE · INTEGRATE method.

Long bio

Gil Cohen is the Founder and Steward of Cognitive State Systems LLC and author of The Human Layer: Designing Human Agency in the Age of Intelligent Systems. His perspective draws from decades across finance, entrepreneurship, manufacturing, technology, immersive environments, music and AI.

His work asks a central question: as intelligent systems become more capable, what must remain human—and how should we design for it? That work has developed into the Human Layer, Cognitive State Design™, and SATA-CODA™, a participant-controlled experience using the repeating method RESET · IGNITE · INTEGRATE.

Interview Themes
  • Human agency in the age of increasingly capable AI
  • AI as instrument, not authority
  • Technology should adapt to humans
  • Decision-making, responsibility and human judgment
  • Designing for interruption, return and continuity
  • The human experience around behavioral-health systems
  • Product evidence, operational evidence and scientific proof are not the same
  • What should remain human when the system can do more?
Evidence & Governance

Evidence earns the right to make a stronger claim.

Cognitive State Systems keeps product evidence, operational evidence, independent research and scientific evidence distinct. Research may inform design without being presented as certification of the product.

Product Evidence

What exists

What has actually been built, presented and experienced.

Operational Evidence

What happens in use

How a bounded experience performs in a real operating environment.

Scientific Evidence

What requires study

Scientific or clinical claims require appropriate independent research.
